Chapter Sixteen

Ginger’s stomach churned over Rosalina’s obvious distress. If Archer didn’t get back soon, Rosalina was going to do something crazy . . . like attempt to look for him.

Visiting the favela in broad daylight was risky. Doing it at night would be both stupid and lethal. But they’d have one hell of a job trying to stop her.

A sound outside had all four of them glancing at each other.

“Rosa! Rosa!” Archer’s voice punched through the silence.

Rosalina shoved back on her chair so fast it toppled over, and Nonna jumped. Leaving it there, Rosa raced into the hallway clutching her hands beneath her belly.

Abandoning Nonna at the table, Ginger and Alessandro chased after Rosa, heading to the stern.

“Archer!” Rosalina’s voice was high-pitched, frantic.

“I’m here. I’m here. Don’t run.”

Rosalina ran right into his chest, and they wrapped their arms around each other. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried—Jesus. What happened?”

Archer had swelling on this cheek and a cut on his lip. Ginger had a terrible feeling those injuries were only a small representation of what he’d been through.

“We need to talk.” His tone had dread sitting in Ginger’s chest like a block of ice.

“What is it? What’s going on?” Rosalina’s stress was next level.

Movement behind Archer caught Ginger’s attention. It was Jimmy. His limp was worse than normal, and both his eyes were black and swollen.

But it was the man behind him who had fear carving its way through Ginger. The stranger was dressed in a way that proved he had money. His swagger confirmed he was in control. And his expression verified they were all in deep trouble.

“Where’s Nonna?” Archer asked.

“At the dining table.”

He nodded. “Good. Let’s go to her.” Archer waved Ginger and Alessandro forward.

Ginger swiveled on her heel, and it took all her might not to break into a sprint.

“What’s going on, Arch?” Rosalina’s whisper was forced.

“I’ll tell you when we’re all together.”

“Who are these men? Did they hurt you?” With each question, Rosalina’s voice grew more shrill.

Archer didn’t respond. The fact that he didn’t introduce the strangers suggested they were not welcome. The evil scowl on Jimmy’s face proved it. Ginger’s mind raced, trying to comprehend what was happening. By bringing those men onto his yacht, Archer had put all their lives in jeopardy, but he wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t have to.

What do they have over him?

It could only be one thing—the threat to kill one of them, most likely his fiancée and unborn baby.

Ginger’s heart thumped in her ears as she reached for Alessandro’s hand. He squeezed hard, indicating that he, too, was worried about the newcomers.

They spilled into the saloon, and Alessandro clutched Ginger’s hand, dragging her around to the other side of the dining table. "Nonna, vieni a sederti qui.” He pulled out a chair.

Ginger had no idea what he’d said to Nonna. But when Nonna moved to the chair he was indicating to, the urgency in her movements matched Alessandro’s tone.

Rosalina also sat, equal parts gingerly and as if she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
